About Rock Island Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge

Rock Island Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is located on Arsenal Island, situated in the Mississippi River between the cities of Davenport, Iowa, and Rock Island, Illinois. As one of the smallest national wildlife refuges, it occupies roughly 200 acres and was established to protect critical habitat for migratory birds and diverse wildlife within an urban river landscape. The refuge represents an important green space along the Mississippi Flyway, a crucial migratory route for dozens of bird species. Ecologically, it features riparian woodlands, wetlands, and riverine ecosystems supporting waterfowl, shorebirds, white-tailed deer, beavers, and other native species. Historically, the island has housed a US Army Arsenal since the early 19th century, and today the wildlife refuge coexists with ongoing military operations, which limits public access to select areas. Visitors are encouraged to participate in guided tours, wildlife observation, and photography opportunities through scheduled public events and environmental programs. The refuge offers a rare glimpse of natural river habitats amid a heavily developed metropolitan corridor. Birdwatchers can spot species such as bald eagles, great blue herons, and various ducks and warblers during migration seasons. The adjacent Mississippi River provides additional opportunities for boating and scenic views of the Quad Cities. Rock Island Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge serves as an important conservation area balancing preservation, recreation, and cultural heritage within the urban river setting.
